Frequently Asked Questions

Is Berserk finished?
Not yet. After the tragic death of creator Kentaro Miura in May 2021, the manga resumed publication in June 2022. It is now being produced by Studio Gaga (Miura's assistants) under the supervision of Kouji Mori, Miura's lifelong friend who knows the intended ending of the story.
What is the 'Eclipse'?
The Eclipse is the pivotal turning point in the story. It is a sacrificial ceremony where Griffith activates the Beherit (Egg of the King) to summon the God Hand. He sacrifices the entire Band of the Hawk to become the demon lord Femto. Guts and Casca are the only survivors, but are left physically and mentally scarred.
Why is Guts called the 'Black Swordsman'?
Guts is known as the Black Swordsman because of his appearance after the Eclipse: he wears black armor, a black cloak, and wields a massive black sword (Dragonslayer) to hunt demons (Apostles) at night. The title also reflects his dark, vengeful path during the 'Black Swordsman Arc'.
What is the Brand of Sacrifice?
The Brand of Sacrifice is a cursed symbol branded onto Guts and Casca during the Eclipse. It marks them as offerings to demons. The Brand bleeds when demons are near and attracts evil spirits to them constantly, especially at night, forcing Guts to fight for survival without rest.
How big is the Dragonslayer sword?
The Dragonslayer is described as "too big to be called a sword. Massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough. Indeed, it was a heap of raw iron." It is approximately 6 to 7 feet long and 12 inches wide. Guts can wield it due to his immense strength and lifelong training with oversized weapons.
Which anime adaptation should I watch?
Most fans recommend the 1997 Anime for the best atmosphere and music (by Susumu Hirasawa), covering the Golden Age Arc. The Movie Trilogy (2012-2013) is also good for visuals. The 2016/2017 series is controversial due to its CGI quality. However, the Manga is universally considered the definitive and superior way to experience the story.
Who is the God Hand?
The God Hand are a group of five powerful demon sovereigns who serve the 'Idea of Evil' and rule over Apostles. They are: Void (the leader), Slan, Ubik, Conrad, and Femto (Griffith). They manipulate causality and human fate.
What is the Berserker Armor?
The Berserker Armor is a cursed artifact created by dwarves. It removes the wearer's subconscious limiters on pain and fear, allowing them to fight with superhuman speed and strength. However, it damages the user's body, breaking bones and piercing flesh to keep them fighting until death, and can cause them to lose their sanity to the 'Beast of Darkness'.
Is Casca healed?
Yes. After years of being in a regressed, childlike state due to the trauma of the Eclipse, Casca's mind was restored in the Elfhelm Arc (Chapter 355) thanks to the help of Schierke and Farnese traveling into her dreams. However, seeing Guts still triggers her PTSD.
What is the relationship between Guts and Griffith?
Their relationship is the core of the series. Initially, they were best friends and comrades with deep mutual respect. Griffith saw Guts as the only one who made him forget his dream. However, Griffith's ambition led him to sacrifice Guts and everyone else, turning them into bitter enemies. It represents a tragic duality of love, hate, admiration, and betrayal.
