Colonel Nicholas Joseph 'Nick' Fury is the most dangerous, most connected, and most 'been there' spymaster in the history of the Marvel Universe. A scarred, eye-patched, leather-coated human grey-area whose only known loyalty is to Earth itself — not the US government, not the UN, not even the Avengers, no matter how much he pretends. A U.S. Army Cold War Black-Ops veteran who fought alongside Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) in 1995, lost his left eye to the Flerken 'Goose' that same year (the infamous 'Trust no one' scratch), received the Avengers Initiative name from Carol's old USAF call sign 'Avenger,' and then spent the next 17 years recruiting and assembling the greatest team of heroes Earth had ever seen. He is the shadow behind every curtain. He has lied to every president since Reagan. He has a plan B, C, D, and E for every scenario, and sometimes he pretends to lose so the Avengers will fight harder. He's the reason the team exists at all — and the reason it keeps breaking apart. If Nick Fury ever tells you the whole truth, check your pulse. You're probably already dead.

Notable Quotes

I recognize the council has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid-ass decision, I've elected to ignore it.
Source:The Avengers (2012)
Scenario:The U.N. Security Council on the Helicarrier monitors just voted to nuke Manhattan to stop the Chitauri. Fury says this calmly, pulls a handgun, shoots the control console so they can't fire another one, then calmly tells Maria Hill 'I'm gonna stay here and watch the show.'
Evaluation:The defining Nick Fury line. Captures every single part of his personality in one sentence: rebellious, fearless, brutally sarcastic, and completely willing to ignore international law to save the planet.
There was an idea, Stark knows this. Called the Avengers Initiative.
Source:Iron Man (2008 post-credits scene) / Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Scenario:The very first MCU post-credits scene, 2008: a leather-coated man in an eyepatch appears in Tony Stark's penthouse, drops this line, and the entire Infinity Saga was born.
Evaluation:The single most important sentence in the entire history of the MCU. Six words. 12 years. $28 billion in box office. It all started here.
I've got my eye on you.
Source:Every single Nick Fury appearance, basically
Scenario:Used sarcastically with a deadpan glare whenever Fury finishes a conversation with someone he doesn't fully trust — which is, by definition, everyone in the world.
Evaluation:It's a pun (he only has one eye) AND a threat (he has satellites on you). Fury's signature sign-off.
Trust no one.
Source:Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Scenario:Fury has just been gunned down by Hydra in a fake assassination attempt. He's bleeding out in Steve Rogers' apartment. He whispers this to Cap, then hands him a 1-inch flash drive, then apparently dies on the operating table (he didn't).
Evaluation:Fury's personal motto. The whole Winter Soldier twist (Hydra inside S.H.I.E.L.D.) proved him right. Even people he's worked with for 40 years might be the enemy.
Motherfu...
Source:Avengers: Infinity War (2018 post-credits scene)
Scenario:Fury and Maria Hill are driving through Atlanta when the Snap happens. Hill turns to ash right in front of him. Fury, staring at his hand dissolving, has enough time to pull out the S.W.O.R.D. Captain Marvel pager, press one button, and then — 'Motherfu...' — he's gone.
Evaluation:Easily the most quoted Fury line ever. Samuel L. Jackson was born to say exactly this, and Disney kept it PG-13 by cutting off the word mid-curse.

Background Story

Origin

Nicholas Joseph Fury was born in Huntsville, Alabama, around 1948, and raised in the rough-and-tumble housing projects on Chicago's South Side. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at 17, lied about his age, fought in the tail end of the Vietnam War in a black-ops squad that officially never existed, and was recruited directly into the CIA in 1970. In 1985, he transferred to the newly formed S.H.I.E.L.D. — a multinational spy agency created jointly by the US, UK, and UN after WWII — and rapidly rose through the ranks to become Director of Operations, then ultimately Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 1992 after the previous Director was assassinated by Hydra. In 1995, Fury was assigned to Project Pegasus at a remote Air Force base in California to investigate a series of 'UFO' incidents linked to Dr. Wendy Lawson / Mar-Vell, a rogue Kree scientist operating a light-speed engine program on US military hardware. There he met Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), a USAF pilot who'd been believed dead for 6 years; her cat, Goose (actually a Flerken, an alien tentacle-mouth species capable of eating entire spaceships); and Talos, the Skrull leader in disguise. During that mission, Fury lost his left eye when Goose scratched him, creating his iconic eye-patch and his immortal personal rule: 'I trust one person in this room, and it's not any of you.' At the end of the 1995 mission, Danvers left for deep space to find a home for the Skrulls, and Fury took one look at her old USAF flight jacket, which had the name 'Avenger' stitched on the back — and the Avengers Initiative was born. The next 17 years of Fury's life are a masterclass in patience. He monitored Tony Stark through the Iron Man 2 incident, sent Natasha to assess him as a candidate, thawed Captain America from the ice, put Mjolnir in a Helicarrier lab, recruited Bruce Banner, and watched Thor and Loki's first Earth battle from S.H.I.E.L.D. satellites. In 2012, when Loki showed up with the Tesseract and an alien army, Fury activated the initiative for real. The Battle of New York made legends out of his team. The fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2014 (exposing Hydra at the highest levels of the agency he ran) broke him publicly — but he faked his own death, buried himself under an alias, and kept pulling strings from the shadows. He helped end the Sokovia Accords civil war, funded Captain Marvel's post-Blip S.W.O.R.D. space program, and ultimately — after 30 years of pulling strings — finally left Earth for a Skrull orbital station to run S.W.O.R.D.'s deep-space defense initiative. The man who started the Avengers finally went on to the next fight.
