Clinton Francis Barton, codenamed Hawkeye — 'the guy with the bow and arrow' and the only original Avenger who can make that claim proudly. Born and raised in rural Iowa before joining a traveling carnival as a teen trick-shot archer, Clint earned his codename 'Hawkeye' for never, ever missing a shot — not once, in the entire history of the MCU, does an arrow from Hawkeye's bow land off-target. Recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. as a Level 7 black-ops assassin alongside Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow, the partner he spares in Budapest instead of killing), Clint became the rock of the Avengers roster: the quiet, stable married father of three who stays off the radar until the world needs him. After the Snap of 2018 took his wife and all three children, Clint descended into darkness, adopting the identity of 'Ronin' — a katana-wielding vigilante who traveled the world executing every criminal cartel, Yakuza, and Hydra cell that survived the Snap. Natasha found him in Tokyo in 2023 and gave him his life back; he would be the one to light her funeral pyre, and the only Avenger to retire from the roster with his entire family alive and intact at the end.

Scenario:Clint gives Wanda Maximoff a rousing pep talk in the rubble of Sokovia while an entire army of Ultron robots is closing in.
Evaluation:The most relatable line in the entire MCU. Every single fan has had this exact thought at one point watching the Avengers fight a space battle with a guy with a bow.
You and I remember Budapest very differently.

Scenario:Hawkeye and Black Widow banter while firing arrows back-to-back on top of a speeding alien-laden Manhattan taxi during the Battle of New York.
Evaluation:A legendary one-liner that set up a 12-year fan mystery over what ACTUALLY happened in Budapest — finally answered in the 2021 Black Widow solo movie.
I don't miss. It's a gift. It's also a curse.
Source:Hawkeye (2021, Disney+)
Scenario:Clint tells Kate Bishop about the one thing he regrets most about being 'perfect' — never getting to blame a bad shot on anything but himself.
Evaluation:The quiet tragedy of Hawkeye's whole character. His perfect aim saved millions; it also meant he never got to miss a single one of the S.H.I.E.L.D.-ordered assassinations he hated.
Don't give me hope.
Source:Avengers: Endgame (2023)
Scenario:Rain-soaked Ronin Clint has just slaughtered the Yakuza in Tokyo. Natasha says she can bring his family back. Clint, broken, sobs this line at her.
Evaluation:The turning point of the 5-year dark era — the moment Ronin let himself believe the impossible might actually be possible.
Whatever it takes.
Source:Avengers: Endgame (2023)
Scenario:All six original Avengers say this line in a close-up circular pan right before the Time Heist — Hawkeye's delivery is specifically dark, as he's already accepted he might not come back.
Evaluation:The Infinity Saga battle cry. A mantra that echoes from the first 'Avengers, assemble!' to the final Snap. Hawkeye's delivery is the darkest because he was the one who'd already lost everything once.

Background Story

Origin

Clinton Francis Barton was born in Waverly, Iowa, to alcoholic parents Harold and Edith Barton, both of whom died in a drunk-driving crash when Clint was 9. He and his 10-year-old brother Barney spent 6 years in and out of foster homes before running away at 15 to join the Carson Carnival of Travelling Wonders. There, Clint was taken under the wing of the carnival's star archer, Jacques Duquesne (the original Swordsman), who taught him archery... and also how to be a petty thief and grifter. By 18, Clint had won every trick-shot competition in the country, and earned his circus nickname 'Hawkeye' — 'the world's greatest marksman.' A job with S.H.I.E.L.D. followed, where Director Nick Fury personally recruited him as a Level 7 Black-ops assassin. On a mission to Budapest in 2003, Clint was ordered to take out the KGB's most deadly assassin: the Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff. He tracked her for three days. Had a clear head-shot. And then... he didn't take it. Instead, he walked up to her, offered her a new identity with S.H.I.E.L.D., and said 'You don't have to be their weapon anymore.' That one choice changed everything. Clint and Natasha became S.H.I.E.L.D.'s deadliest team. They did missions together that remain classified to this day. Off-duty, Clint met and fell in love with Laura, a S.H.I.E.L.D. IT analyst turned farmer, and built a secret farmhouse in Iowa. Fury helped erase Laura and their kids — Cooper, Lila, Nathaniel Pietro (named for Pietro Maximoff who died saving Clint in Sokovia) — from every database on Earth. Nobody outside S.H.I.E.L.D. Level 10 even knew Clint had a family until Age of Ultron, when he took the Avengers there to hide. The Snap of 2018 broke him. While he was out on a family picnic, mid-hot-dog with Lila, every single member of his family turned to ash right in front of him. For five years, Clint operated as 'Ronin,' traveling the planet executing every drug cartel, Yakuza family, Mafia, and human-trafficking ring that survived the Snap — people who, in his words, 'should have been snapped instead of my family.' Natasha tracked him to a rainy Tokyo alley in 2023, and told him they could undo it. For Clint, the Time Heist was personal. He survived the Battle of Earth. His family came back. At the end, Kate Bishop — a 22-year-old fangirl archer who'd been inspired by Clint's Battle of New York rooftop fight — found him, and for the first time in decades, Clint Barton finally decided he was ready to pass the bow on.
