**Akira** is a landmark cyberpunk story set in a post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo. It follows Kaneda, a bike gang leader, and his friend Tetsuo, who acquires dangerous psychic abilities after a government experiment. The story delves into themes of government corruption, youth rebellion, and the terrifying potential of human evolution.

How many seasons, episodes, and chapters does Akira have?

*Akira* is primarily known as a **feature film** (1988) and a **manga series**. The manga consists of **6 volumes** (spanning over 2,000 pages). The anime is a single **124-minute movie**, not a TV series with seasons or episodes.

In what order should I watch Akira?

There is only one **movie** to watch: *Akira* (1988). However, the **manga** is highly recommended as it contains a much more expansive story, character depth, and a different ending compared to the film. Most fans suggest watching the movie first for the visual spectacle, then reading the manga for the full narrative experience.

Who are the main characters in Akira?

The story centers on **Shotaro Kaneda**, the charismatic leader of the Capsules biker gang, and **Tetsuo Shima**, his insecure friend who gains god-like powers. Other key characters include **Kei**, a resistance fighter; **Colonel Shikishima**, the military leader trying to contain the threat; and the mysterious **Akira** himself.

Is Akira finished, and when is the next season expected?

Yes, the original *Akira* story (both manga and movie) is **finished**. There is no "next season." However, a **new anime series** adapting the *entire* manga story has been announced by Katsuhiro Otomo and Sunrise, though a release date has not been confirmed. A live-action Hollywood adaptation has also been in "development hell" for decades.

What is the best starting point for beginners?

The **1988 movie** is the best starting point due to its legendary status and visual impact. It is a self-contained experience that introduces the world and characters perfectly, even if it condenses the plot significantly.

Is Akira suitable for beginners to anime?

*Akira* is widely considered a **must-watch classic**, but it can be intense for complete beginners due to its complex plot and graphic violence. However, for those interested in **sci-fi, cyberpunk, or animation history**, it is the perfect introduction to what the medium is capable of.

Why is Akira so popular?

*Akira* is popular because it **revolutionized anime** in the West and defined the cyberpunk genre. Its incredibly detailed hand-drawn animation, mature storytelling, and iconic design (like Kaneda’s bike) set a standard that influences pop culture to this day.

Does Akira have any famous memes or internet jokes?

Yes. The most famous is the **"Akira Slide"**, where Kaneda slides his bike to a stop. This shot has been referenced and recreated in countless movies, shows, and games (like *Batman: TAS*, *Star Wars: Clone Wars*, and *Nope*). Tetsuo screaming "KANEDAAAA!" and Kaneda screaming "TETSUOOOO!" is also a common meme.

What are the best episodes, arcs, or moments?

Since it's a movie, there are no episodes, but iconic moments include: * The **opening bike chase** through Neo-Tokyo * **Tetsuo’s transformation** in the stadium * The **orbital laser (SOL)** strike * The destruction of Neo-Tokyo
