The phrase **'The cake is a lie'** is a meme originating from graffiti left by a previous test subject (Doug Rattmann) warning that GLaDOS's promised reward is false. Spoiler: At the end of Portal 1, you *do* see a cake, but you (Chell) don't get to eat it.

Is Portal connected to Half-Life?

Yes. **Aperture Science** and **Black Mesa** (from Half-Life) were rival companies competing for government contracts. Aperture Science is located in the same universe. The ship *Borealis*, belonging to Aperture, is a major plot point in Half-Life 2: Episode Two.

**Chell** is the silent protagonist of the series. She is a test subject with 'abnormally high tenacity,' which is why she survives. Fan theories (and hinted in-game dialogue) suggest she might be the daughter of Cave Johnson and Caroline, making her conflict with GLaDOS (Caroline) a twisted family drama.

Why does GLaDOS hate birds?

In the co-op campaign and single-player of Portal 2, GLaDOS shows a fear of birds. This is because during the time she was turned into a potato battery, she was pecked by a crow. The trauma of being helpless and eaten by a bird left a lasting impression on her AI.

Will there be a Portal 3?

Valve is notorious for not releasing 'third' installments (Half-Life 3, Left 4 Dead 3). While writers have expressed interest and the universe continues in spinoffs like *Aperture Desk Job*, no official Portal 3 has been announced.
