The Arc Reactor is a fusion type power source designed by Tony Stark (based on his father Howard Stark's designs). Originally, a miniaturized version was implanted in Tony's chest to power an electromagnet that kept shrapnel from entering his heart after an injury in Afghanistan. It subsequently evolved to serve as the primary power source for his Iron Man suits, providing immense clean energy to run the suit's flight systems, repulsors, and life support.

The Mark XLIV "Hulkbuster" was designed specifically to subdue the Hulk. The Mark L (50) and Mark LXXXV (85) utilized nanotechnology, allowing the suit to form around Tony's body from a housing unit and create various weapons instantly. The "Rescue" armor was designed for Pepper Potts.
