What is the primary conflict in Interstellar?

The conflict is humanity's survival against a dying Earth plagued by 'The Blight', a crop disease causing global famine and oxygen depletion. Cooper must choose between staying with his family to die or leaving them behind on a desperate, possibly suicide mission through a wormhole to find a habitable new home for the human race.

How does time dilation work on Miller's Planet?

Miller's Planet orbits extremely close to Gargantua, a supermassive black hole. The immense gravity warps spacetime so severely that one hour on the surface equals seven years on Earth. A brief stop results in 23 years passing for Cooper's family, highlighting the tragic cost of relativity.

What is the Tesseract scene explaining?

The Tesseract is a 5-dimensional construct built by future humans inside the black hole. It physicalizes time as a spatial dimension, allowing Cooper to navigate to specific moments in Murph's bedroom. He uses gravity (the only force that crosses dimensions) to manipulate the watch hand, transmitting the quantum data needed to solve the gravity equation.

Who are 'They' mentioned throughout the film?

'They' are originally thought to be aliens, but Cooper realizes 'They' are humanity from the distant future. These evolved humans, existing in 5 dimensions, created the wormhole and the Tesseract to ensure their own past survival by giving Cooper the tools to save humanity in the present.

What was Dr. Mann's betrayal?

Dr. Mann, considered the 'best of us', falsified his data to make his frozen, uninhabitable planet look promising. He did this to lure a rescue mission, choosing his own survival over the mission's success. His betrayal represents the fallibility of human nature even in the face of extinction.

What is the difference between Plan A and Plan B?

Plan A was to solve a gravity equation to launch massive space stations and evacuate Earth's population. Plan B was a backup: a population bomb of fertilized eggs to start a new colony on another world, leaving the people on Earth to die. Professor Brand knew Plan A was impossible without black hole data, secretly banking only on Plan B.

What is the significance of the poem 'Do not go gentle into that good night'?

Dylan Thomas's poem is recited repeatedly by Professor Brand. It symbolizes the film's core theme of human resilience and the refusal to accept extinction passively. It urges humanity to fight against the 'dying of the light' (death/entropy) with rage and determination.

How accurate is the black hole visualization?

Extremely accurate. The visual effects team worked with physicist Kip Thorne to solve Einstein's equations for light rays around a black hole. The resulting image of Gargantua, with its glowing accretion disk and gravitational lensing, was so scientifically sound it led to published scientific papers.

Does Cooper reunite with Murph?

Yes. After being ejected from the Tesseract, Cooper is rescued near Saturn 124 years after he left. He reunites with an elderly Murph on her deathbed. She gives him closure, telling him no parent should watch their child die, and urges him to go find Brand.

What happens to Amelia Brand at the end?

Amelia Brand arrives at Edmunds' Planet, which is shown to be habitable with breathable air. She sets up camp and prepares the Plan B embryos. The film ends with Cooper stealing a ship to travel through the wormhole again to join her, implying a new beginning for humanity.
