What is 'Permadeath' in Fire Emblem?

Permadeath (Permanent Death) is a signature feature of the Fire Emblem series. Traditionally, if a character falls in battle, they are lost forever and cannot be used in future chapters. This raises the stakes of every move. However, modern titles (starting from Fire Emblem: Awakening) offer a 'Casual Mode' that disables permadeath, allowing fallen units to return in the next battle.

For the Nintendo Switch, 'Fire Emblem: Three Houses' is an excellent starting point due to its strong narrative and social simulation elements. 'Fire Emblem: Awakening' on the 3DS is the game that saved the franchise and is also perfect for beginners. For Game Boy Advance users, 'Fire Emblem' (The Blazing Blade) is a classic introduction.
