What is Final Fantasy and what makes it special?

Final Fantasy is a legendary science fantasy role-playing game (RPG) anthology franchise created by Hironobu Sakaguchi and developed by Square Enix. It is renowned for its cinematic storytelling, innovative combat systems (like the Active Time Battle), and iconic music by Nobuo Uematsu. Each numbered entry features a standalone story, new characters, and a unique world, meaning you don't need to play previous games to enjoy a new one. The series is a pillar of the RPG genre, blending fantasy elements like magic and crystals with sci-fi technology.

Do I need to play Final Fantasy games in order?

No, you do not need to play them in order. Most main numbered titles (e.g., Final Fantasy VII, X, XVI) are completely standalone with their own distinct universes, characters, and plotlines. The only exceptions are direct sequels like Final Fantasy X-2 or the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. This anthology format makes the series very accessible to newcomers, allowing you to start with whichever setting or gameplay style appeals to you most.
