The story takes place between Karakura Town (modern Japan), Soul Society (the afterlife for spirits and Soul Reapers), and Hueco Mundo (the desert realm of Hollows). The balance between these worlds is maintained by the Gotei 13.
Central to the series are Zanpakuto (soul-cutter swords), which release unique powers via Shikai and Bankai. Reiatsu (Spiritual Pressure) determines a fighter's strength. The Gotei 13 is the military organization of Soul Reapers led by 13 Captains. Other factions include Quincy (human spiritualists) and Arrancar (unmasked Hollows).
